Dr. Terri Mayes, Executive Director

In 2017, Dr. Mayes became the interim Director of the youth center. Under her passionate leadership and contagious energy, the entire center went through an overwhelming transformation. The location received a total facelift and the enrollment in the center quadrupled. In 2018, Dr. Mayes was named Executive Director by the Board of Directors. Dr. Mayes believes that the students that attend our program are our future. "Our goal is to prepare them so that they will be equipped not only academically, but Mentally and Spiritually as well, she explains. I believe that every student deserves a chance and with the proper support and love, all of their dreams are achievable!"

Dr. Janice Merritt, Director of Curriculum

Janice is a graduate from the Rome City Schools. After college, she returned home to teach in the Rome City Schools System. She served as a second grade teacher for 8 years, and  spent the remaining 22 years as an administrator in Rome City Schools. She retired in 2010 with 32 years of experience. In 2010, she served as the Executive Director of Rebecca Blaylock Child Development Center until 2015. Currently, she serves as a Service Coordinator with the Babies Can't Wait early intervention program through the Department of Public Health.

Sherri Murray, Admissions and Academic Support Coordinator

Sherri comes to us with 35 years of experience in Administration, Customer Service, Finance, Credit Reporting , Education and Mentoring. Sherri was a former employee for Georgia State University Police Department Administrative Personnel in Atlanta Georgia. Upon relocating to Rome she was blessed to serve as an employee of Rome City Schools, where she gave 15 years of dedicated service. North Broad Youth Center is the dream of a local entrepreneur and business owner Rene Fountain. He had the vision of encouraging and empowering the local youth of this generation. his desire was to create save and productive place for children and youth to go at after school instead of being at home alone. He began to pursue the dream by purchasing the beautiful building located at 1148 North Broad Street. The property has been completely renovated and transformed into a kid friendly environment. Since it's inception, the North Broad Youth Center has developed into a staple in the North broad Community. Dr. Terri Mayes attributes their success to the dedicated Stand and Volunteers that "not only love what they are doing but they love the children that they serve".

The North Broad Youth Center is a non-profit organization that offers a city-wide after-school program aptly named Rising Stars. Its goal is to provide children and youth, ages 4-14, with opportunities and activities that strengthen and encourage positive relationships. This free program is designed to engage students in Science, Technology, Arts, Reading and Social Skills. Research continues to show that these skills are the most critical in creating tomorrow's workforce. Students will build confidence while practicing volunteerism and community involvement. Outreach opportunities will allow them to gain insight into our Local, State and Federal governments thus creating a respect of community and the need for civic involvement. Students are not only supported Academically with the tutorial and mentoring programs but they are encouraged Spiritually through Bible Study and Prayer. The Christian Community has embraced our program and we are pleased to count North Broad Baptist Church and Greater Refuge Ministries as long-term committed partners.

  • The Center is fortunate to have the dedicated Bonner Scholar volunteers from Berry College who assist with daily instruction and mentoring. We also have students from Shorter, Dalton State, as well as high school volunteers.
  • The YMCA provides our students a daily nutritional meal. Our program is also supported and maintained by our founder Rene Fountain and our community partner Pro Systems.
